Today the National Sports Advisors are picking the San Francisco Giants to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Jason Schmidt (6-5, 3.57 ERA) gets the start tonight for San Francisco. Schmidt was a winner on Sunday against Los Angeles, allowing one run and four hits in seven innings of a 3-1 victory. Schmidt had 10 strikeouts, marking the third time this season he has posted double figures in that department. The former Pirates right-hander won his only start against his old club, allowing only a solo homer in seven innings against them last season. He is 2-4 with a 4.84 ERA in seven career starts at PNC Park.

Kip Wells (10-8, 3.38 ERA) gets the starting assignment for the Pirates this evening. Wells pitched to hard luck for the third consecutive time on Sunday, losing 4-0 at Houston despite allowing only two runs and five hits in six innings. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 2.81 ERA in his last three starts, and has not allowed a home run in any of those outings. Wells last won on July 13 in Milwaukee, allowing three runs and five hits in a 5-3 triumph. Wells, acquired in the off-season from the Chicago White Sox, has never faced the Giants.

So why the GIANTS? Well, we are looking for the Giants to bounce back big after last night's crushing 9th inning loss with two outs to the Pirates. Schmidt is coming off of a superb outing last sunday versus the Dodgers, when he went seven strong innings, giving up just 1 earned run on 4 hits with 10 strikeouts. The Giants have lost eight of eleven and are still trying to catch the Dodgers in the Wild Card. Tonight is a big game for the Giants and we expect them to respond nicely.
